- Fitting Guide (Bridles)
Bridle & Headcollar sizing
The first thing to understand here is that a COB sized bridle or headcollar is not designed to fit a Cob necessarily...
The Terms 'Pony' 'Cob' and 'Full' are probably more easily understood as Small, Medium, and Large; thereby, the 'Cob Size' Bridle will fit Horses with smaller head such as Arabs for example. Most Cobs such as Clydesdale, Shire and Percheron crosses, including Vanners or 'Traditional' coloureds and Irish Sports Horses, will require a Full size bridle and Headcollar.
The larger boys & girls (say 16hh plus Cobs) will generally require 'Extra Full', a size regularly offered by many top brands these days.
'Extra Small' is also now readily available and is the size you should seek if you have a Pony with a small head such as a Welsh Section A, or Shetland.
Most Horse owners will report that their horse's head requires cobbling together of two bridles, one Full and one Cob size; this is also our experience with both our Horses (one Shire cross and one Clydesdale cross, both around 15hh) requiring different parts - the Shire has full size cheek pieces and nose band but a Cob sized brow band as she has a long narrow face, whilst the Clydesdale requires cob sized cheek pieces, a cob sized nose band and a full sized Brow band as he has a more compact head with typically broad forehead (lots going on between his ears he tells me!) and delicate nose. Luckily for us we can buy two bridles and suit both but always have to buy extra reins as both need full size!
