It is worth first mentioning that it isn’t unusual for an individual to only be able to wear EITHER a hat OR a helmet; this depends on the SHAPE of their head rather than the SIZE. I for example, have a long face and therefore a longer head – as a result, Helmets/Skulls perch on top of my head like the proverbial pea on a drum and offer very little protection to the lower part of the back of my head; Conversely, my Husband cannot wear a Hat because the more ‘oval’ shape applies pressure to his temples giving him bad headaches.
It is therefore always advisable to have headgear fitted professionally (check for BETA Certification of the person offering the fitting service.)
