Jackets & Over-garments

Depending on the style of jacket and the fit (i.e ‘loose’ or ‘fitted’) there are many issues to consider when purchasing a jacket!

Starting with the basics, many styles are sized according to chest measurement however; you must first enquire whether the manufacturer quotes the ACTUAL chest measurement of the jacket, or THE CHEST SIZE OF THE PERSON THE JACKET WILL FIT.

If they quote the ACTUAL chest measurement then you have to decide how much room you want in the garment; a show jacket for example needs to be quite close fitting but allow room for movement; to this end, adults will need an extra 2-4” on top of their actual chest measurement (which, in both sexes, is the measurement around the widest part of the chest – or over the top of the bosom for women.) 1-2” should be sufficient for a child.

A winter riding coat on the other hand, which may be worn over multi-layers, would need to have a minimum of 6” on top of actual chest size for a comfortable fit, again, half that for a child.

Fuller Fillies operate a constant ‘benchmarking’ across their whole range of jackets and over-garments and size them by UK dress size; because their sizing is constant, once you know your FF size you can order with confidence repeatedly – unless you chose to drop down a dress size for a neater fit of course! Descriptions on Fuller Fillies’ garments always state the designed fit of the jacket to make it easier for you to do the rest!

Children’s jackets are again, often sized according to the height or age of the child however; we feel this can be very misleading, (I have an 11 year old Niece who is 5’6’’ with size 8 feet…) as such, we try to quote the measurement of the jacket at the chest for ease of ordering.
