- Fitting Guide (Jodhpurs)
Jodhpurs and Breeches
What are they?
Let’s start with the basics; there is only one difference between Jodhpurs and Breeches…
Jodhpurs have a turn up cuff at the bottom making them particularly good for wearing with short boots although they work equally well with a long ones – whilst Breeches have a Velcro enclosure at the ankle meaning that they make a smooth line under long boots or half-chaps. Either can have a plain or full seat, and either can have a pleated or plain front.
Fitting
Adult Jods and Breeches are bought in WAIST SIZE; this means that if you buy a pair of 30” Jods the waist should measure 30” unstretched. You then need to know how much stretch the manufacturer has built into the style. Typically it is between 4 and 6 inches meaning they will provide a perfect fit for a lady with a 34-36” waist.
Fuller Fillies are famous for building a good 6 inches of stretch into most of their styles, and most knitted styles from other manufacturers have almost as much; woven styles tend to be less stretchy so work on them stretching by 4 inches.
Leg length is the measurement from the crotch to the inner ankle bone; a Ladies’ Regular leg tends to be 29” whilst Short is 27” and Long 31”. Gent’s are 29” for Short, 31” for Regular and 33” for Long, unless otherwise stated. Unfortunately this can vary from one manufacturer to another!
Children’s Jodhpurs are either labelled in Age or in Height; as these are ridiculously confusing Tackanory always puts the unstretched waist measurement in brackets afterwards. Because there is less fabric in a Child’s jodhpur the 4-6” stretch doesn’t exist therefore it is best to order your child’s ACTUAL waist measurement or no more than 2” less than that if they prefer a nice, close fit.
Typically a Child’s Jodhpur measuring 26” at the waist will also measure 26” at the inner leg.
Breeches for children are a rarity!
